30 years of experience in Fatigue and Damage Tolerance of aircraft structures (Both military and Transport category) at National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore, India. Experience in certification requirements of military and civil airframes (composites and metals) for structural integrity Excellent coaching ability and human relation skill. Airframe development management skill with emphasis on static strength, fatigue and damage tolerance (structural integrity) certification requirements with emphasis on analysis and full scale test correlation within the time frame and cost of the project.

Have led a team of scientists for life extension of a fleet of military aircraft through a full scale fatigue testing program. Also led a group of scientists for structural certification testing of a two seater trainer aircraft (composite) and a 14-seater commuter aircraft.

Have trained a team of scientists at Structural Integrity Division of NAL to carry out full scale fatigue testing of airframes and Total Evaluation of structural integrity (Design, Analysis and test substantiation) of transport airplane.

Preparation of project proposal for life extension of aged military aircraft (MiG 29) of Indian Air Force (IAF) and development of plan for compliance of structural integrity related transport aircraft certification requirements

Ex-Deputy Project Director of Two seater all composite aircraft (HANSA-3) and 14-seater (Metallic) commuter aircraft (SARAS) at NAL.

Ex-Project leader for total technical life extension of MiG 21 BIS fleet of IAF through a Full Scale Fatigue Testing (FSFT).

Ex-Head of Structural Integrity Division of NAL (No. of scientists and technicians 50).

Previous Key Responsibilities :

Prior to Heading the Structural Integrity Division worked as a senior scientist in the division.

Deputy Project Director in NAL’s SARAS and HANSA-3 projects.

Started the career at NAL in February 1977 and continued the applied research activity in the field of fatigue, fracture and structural integrity of airframes.

Guided two Ph.D work, one on short fatigue cracks and the other on fatigue crack closure.

A major chunk of professional life at NAL was spent in full scale fatigue testing of military airframe. (AJEET, MiG 21 M, MiG BIS)

Apart from full scale testing, from 1977 to mid 80’s the emphasis was on applied research in fatigue and fracture. From mid 80’s to mid 1990’s attention was more focused on laboratory scale test simulation of fatigue and fracture phenomenon on a coupon level.

Beyond 1990’s, NAL began to develop its own aircraft and the exposure on structural integrity of complete airframe got a sharper focus.

During the last decade of the career at NAL the primary aim was to train and leave behind a group who can take the responsibility of full scale fatigue testing and fatigue and damage tolerance of complete airframe. All the scientists trained during this period were lifted away from NAL by the private companies taking up engineering outsourcing work in the field of aerospace engineering.

Significant Achievements:

Award for Engineering Technology for advances in fatigue and fracture mechanics 1990 from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

National Aeronautical Prize for contribution in Life Extension Testing of fighter aircraft by Aeronautical Society of India 2007.

Type certification of HANSA-3 aircraft: Based on the execution of all structural tests on HANSA-3 airframe, a major requirement was completed which helped NAL to get type certification for HANSA-3 aircraft from DGCA in May 2001. These tests were innovatively designed and executed at very very low cost.

MiG 21 BIS full scale fatigue testing:

Based on our test data a significant life extension was permitted by CEMILAC (Center for Military Airworthiness & Certification) to the MiG 21 BIS fleet. Based on such test activities the country has now the capability to carryout very sophisticated full scale fatigue testing for our aircraft programs like LCA, IJT and SARAS. We are now in a position to establish a very comprehensive test facility comparable to the best in the world with our in-house developed test hardware and software.

SARAS aircraft Project:

This experience has given the confidence and capability to lead a team to carry out airframe design (static fatigue and damage tolerance), analysis and testing for any aircraft program

Significant Achievements:

Successful completion of structural certification testing on SARAS fuselage and wing for several load cases, which was very important in getting the first flight clearance from DGCA.

Successfully completed SARAS wing ultimate load case test.

Successful design & development of test rigs and test setups for SARAS fuselage and wing certification testing.

Successfully identified the maximum stress location in the SARAS wing by using FEM/FEA and it was substantiated by the structural test.

Successfully completed LCA-Elevon box static test for few load cases.
